These mussels are amazing! And that's coming from someone who usually doesn't care much for mussels, since they're usually flavorless and too tough. I'm guessing everyone else has just been cooking them wrong cuz the mussels at la mejillonera just melted in my mouth! We ordered calamares bravas and my husband chose the mussels vinaigrette and the server suggested we also try the mussels marinera so we got that as well. Everything was delicious! I typically don't even like raw onions but the onions on the mussels vinaigrette had amazing flavor, not at all overpowering. The mussels marinera were kind of like eating mussels in a warm soup, very comforting. And of course the calamares were done right and also tasted great.
We came here first on our night of pinxto hopping since they were the first place open (6pm) and I would've gladly come back at the end of the night for more mussels if I wasn't already full.
Loved this spot - as other reviews note, unpretentious fun vibe with incredible seafood. A great place to kick off the night - don't miss the calamari and wash it down with a cold beer.
MUSSELS MUSSELS MUSSELS. And beer.
We tried coming exactly at opening time only to find the lights off. Undeterred, we came back 30 minutes later to find the lights on and a few locals grabbing a beer and a plate of mussels and patatas bravas. It's an unpretentious spot, fluorescent lighting lights up what feels like a railroad layout 60's diner without barstools. Order your food and drink at the counter, find a spot along the bar or wall to stand, and wait for your food, which comes quickly.
What this diner-esque joint lacks in terms of ambiance it makes up by serving the freshest mussels I've ever eaten. We ate seven plates of mussels in one visit. Had the Tigres Piquantes: con Salsa de Tomate (tomato sauce, not spicy), the al Vapor con Limon (with lemon juice sauce), the Marinera: con Sabor a Mar (in its natural broth). Y favorite was the Marinera and my friend enjoyed the Tigres, there is no wrong answer here--all were delicious, and so fresh. No strange smells or tastes one may usually associate with seafood. The flesh of the mussels was tender and sweet, practically melting in your mouth (ok not really melting...but close enough).
We washed these down with a few cañas of Heineken. A suitable pairing. If we hadn't wanted to eat at other restaurants that night we could've stayed and eaten seven more plates of these babies.
