These mussels are amazing! And that's coming from someone who usually doesn't care much for mussels, since they're usually flavorless and too tough. I'm guessing everyone else has just been cooking them wrong cuz the mussels at la mejillonera just melted in my mouth! We ordered calamares bravas and my husband chose the mussels vinaigrette and the server suggested we also try the mussels marinera so we got that as well. Everything was delicious! I typically don't even like raw onions but the onions on the mussels vinaigrette had amazing flavor, not at all overpowering. The mussels marinera were kind of like eating mussels in a warm soup, very comforting. And of course the calamares were done right and also tasted great. We came here first on our night of pinxto hopping since they were the first place open (6pm) and I would've gladly come back at the end of the night for more mussels if I wasn't already full.

Loved this spot - as other reviews note, unpretentious fun vibe with incredible seafood. A great place to kick off the night - don't miss the calamari and wash it down with a cold beer.

MUSSELS MUSSELS MUSSELS. And beer. We tried coming exactly at opening time only to find the lights off. Undeterred, we came back 30 minutes later to find the lights on and a few locals grabbing a beer and a plate of mussels and patatas bravas. It's an unpretentious spot, fluorescent lighting lights up what feels like a railroad layout 60's diner without barstools. Order your food and drink at the counter, find a spot along the bar or wall to stand, and wait for your food, which comes quickly. What this diner-esque joint lacks in terms of ambiance it makes up by serving the freshest mussels I've ever eaten. We ate seven plates of mussels in one visit. Had the Tigres Piquantes: con Salsa de Tomate (tomato sauce, not spicy), the al Vapor con Limon (with lemon juice sauce), the Marinera: con Sabor a Mar (in its natural broth). Y favorite was the Marinera and my friend enjoyed the Tigres, there is no wrong answer here--all were delicious, and so fresh. No strange smells or tastes one may usually associate with seafood. The flesh of the mussels was tender and sweet, practically melting in your mouth (ok not really melting...but close enough). We washed these down with a few cañas of Heineken. A suitable pairing. If we hadn't wanted to eat at other restaurants that night we could've stayed and eaten seven more plates of these babies.

Tigres!!! Marinara!! As you walk into La Mejillonera you will hear the bartenders yelling back to the kitchen these orders. You cannot not go wrong with either. The staff are just incredibleas well, most notably Iñaki! Go here if you like good food, good beer and better people

This is like a little hidden gem. It looks like an old whole in the wall, and that adds so much character to this place. We came to try the mussels in salsa tigre. They were just outstanding and very simple. Don't let the simplicity fool you, these very fresh steamed mussels come with a spicy tomato sauce that is out of this world. We also tried the patatas bravas. This is a very popular tapa through out Spain, but the key was the fresness and the quality of the sauces. I had an amazing time, and I am ready for more.

I loved this place! I went here three times - tried their entire menu of mussels and all things fried like the calamari sandwich and the patatas bravas. This has the BEST patatas bravas that I've ever had. I compare all others to La Mejillonera. This place is not fancy - its just a place to hang out with a small group or even a loud rockin' group and enjoy the Heinekin on tap with all the deliciousness of the mussels and the food. Don't wear your nice shoes - because you're suppose to dispose of the napkins and even the mussel shells on the ground! Took a little getting use...but I was unable to stop dumping my trash on the ground for a month as a result of La Mejillonera. The vinegrette style and tigre style was my favorite. The calamari sandwich was somewhat dry but have the bravas sauce with it - and its quite a yummy wich. The service is pretty good and I met so many friendly locals there who are just enjoying the time like I was.

La Mejillonera is a large canteen-like tiled bar specialising in mussels (mejillones) and the vinagreta style mussels was one of my top 5 dishes in San Sebastian and I think probably my favourite mussel dish ever. The mussels were large and plump and the strong, sharp flavour of the onion, lemon and vinegar topping I thought was perfect. We tried the marinera version too but neither of us liked it, the sauce was a bit heavy and just nowhere as good as the vinagreta. We also tried the calamari which I thought was really good, and washed it all down with cerveza con limon (often called clara) which is a great light accompaniment. La Mejillonera seems to open earlier in the evening (or maybe doesn't close at all in the afternoon) than other bars so if you are getting hungry it's a good place to go after a stroll around La Concha!

La Mejillonera is a divey, stand-up, diner-esque decorated purveyor of mussels cooked perfectly and doused in various sauces. They are also the makers of the BEST patatas bravas I had during my entire trip of Spain. This place is worth a special trip.

We came here for the mussels. We had them prepared 3 different ways: plain with a little lemon, soaked in a vinegrette with onions and spices, and finally soaked in a spicy tomato sauce. They were all good, but the latter was my favorite. If you like mussels, check this place out.

with it's cheap shopping mall ambience, this certainly is not a place you wanna hang out in for more than a half hour. but their patatas bravas alone easily earns them 5 stars. it might not look like much; but this, my friends, is the gold standard.

Omg amazing value! Only serves 4 or 5 dishes but they serve them well! Usually absolutely packed. Supposed to just order, eat, leave. The mussels are 10/10 and the fried calamari with peppers taste like they could be €20 in a restaurant elsewhere. Good for a quick snack before drinking or dinner

Definitely a place to try amongst all the tapas bars!!! The middle are delicious & fresh. Different types of sauce you can get with your mussels. We tried them all... We got papas bravas... Yummm! I love anything potatoes. I asked for a small beer he gave me a sample and he drank one with me, and I was like yummm. I'll take a regular & he gave me a large! The ambiance is super chill. You're pretty much standing and ordering from the bar & the staff members are super friendly... You feel like a regular coming here, even if it's your first time. --because their mussels & service was so good! We came back! It was nice that it was only a few doors down from our pension... P.s Free bread, but it's like that with almost all of the tapas bar.. Tip: Don't fill up on those fillers!

This is another to put on the must visit list .... it is very popular and space is often at a premium, however it is worth all the effort. This pinxtoes house specialises in mussels, does great calamari and a potato dish. There are four mussel dishes including vinaigrette, al vapour, marinara and mayonnaise...each serving comes with eight mussels...and there are two calamari dishes. This is wonderful seafood eating at vary modest prices....we cannot wait to visit again!

La Mejillonera is one of the essential pintxo bars worth visiting is San Sebastian's historic "Parte Vieja" neighborhood. The place has been operating for more than 40 years. Loud, crowded, harshly lit and with kitschy nautical decor. It features freshly cooked mussels ("mejillones") covered in numerous sauces -- warm and cold. The best and largest mussels are prepared simply without sauce "Al Vapor" (steamed with a squeeze of fresh lemon). Definitely order these, but be prepared to be told that they're out of them, as they sell out quickly. The "Vinagreta" mussels are delicious - covered with a cool crunchy finely chopped onion and parsley vinaigrette sauce. The "Tigre" mussels are also a house favorite - covered with a warm spicy tomato sauce. Don't miss the house specialty -- Patatas Bravas ("Angry Potatoes"). These are simply the best tasting Bravas I've ever had in Spain. These chunks of fried potatoes are served hot smothered with a creamy aioli sauce and topped with a spicy hot tomato sauce. Try a plate or a platter if you're in a group. You can search long and hard for a better version of this dish - but you'll inevitably end up back here. The bar tenders are a friendly lot and always good for a laugh as they relay food orders back to the kitchen by yelling loudly (San Sebastian's own version of the "cheeseburger, cheeseburger, chips, chips" restaurant made famous by John Belushi on Saturday Night Live many years ago). Leave a nice tip and they'll ring a ship's bell while yelling "Gordo!" ("Fat One") as you walk out.

Local sin mesas se come de pie en barra. Es famoso por lo que siempre hay mucha gente pero siempre encuentras un hueco. Patatas bravas especialidad para comerse un cubo. Calamar bravo siempre pido me encanta. Servicio rápido. Barato.

Entras, pides, te sirven, comes, y te vas!
